Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, the isolated mountain range that runs through Colombia, provides beautiful snow covered peaks that overlook the sea. Although only 25 miles from Colombian Caribbean’s warm beaches, the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta feature a snow covered landscape. The two highest peaks, Colon and Bolivar, reach heights of 18,700 feet above sea level. Adventurous travelers can access the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta by departing from the city of Valledupar and driving to San Sebastian. From San Sebastian, networks of trails lead to glaciers and lakes that are 9,843 feet above sea level.Additional information can be found at http://intercontinentalcry.org/colombia-court-suspends-eco-tourism-project-in-tayrona-national-park/. After this point, only experienced mountain climbers can make their way up to the top. The mountain range features the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta National Natural Park, with a variety of different climate environments ranging from snowy mountain peaks to beaches. Although the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta does not sound as if it would contain ideal living conditions, the mountain range is home to several Indian reserves.

Whether you’re working with a debt settlement family or you’ve got money to burn, Columbia makes for a great and inexpensive trip. If you’re looking to travel around the country you’ve got to hit up a few of these cities which can be had for cheap!
Cartagena: Whitewashed rock and beautiful architecture make this a city you can get lost in. Stroll around (it’s free!) and sample food from all over the country – hire a guide while you’re there for a small fee.
Medellin: It’s easily accessible by bus and it’s come a long way since the days of the drug trade. It’s the city of eternal spring which means there are acres and acres of flowers around every turn – head here for some real South American flavor.
The Amazon: The southern point of Leticia is a great starting point for a journey into the Amazon. It’s going to cost a bit to get here but the Amazon itself (as long as you don’t go too far in) is a great place to see some sights and smell some things you’ll have a hard time believing.

Hiking among the carved terraces of Cuidad Perdida, or “The Lost City” is an awe-inspiring experience. Cuidad Perdida was founded in approximately 800 A.D. and predates Machu Pichu by over 600 years. The Lost City was not rediscovered until 1972 by treasure hunters who happened across a set of some 1200 steps leading up to the city.

The Lost City has 169 terraces carved in the mountainside and a series of tiled roads and round plazas which span about 3,600 feet. The city can be accessed by a climb up 1,200 stone steps to the city’s only entrance. A trek to and among the terraces will take you through the jungle where days can get quite warm and nights quite cold. This helps explain it more. There are three native tribes you may encounter inhabiting the area the Arhuacos, the Arsarios, and the Koguis who still visit the site regularly.

Though the area had been closed to outside visitors for some years, it reopened to hikers in 2005. The carved terraces are both artistic and historic, and well worth your time and efforts to visit. A hike to the terraces takes approximately six days to complete, it is considered moderate in difficulty and requires good physical fitness.

Colombia is one of the best-kept secrets in South America. Colombia is known for world-class coffee, music, and beaches. Withe current government reforms underway, foreign businesses are investing and tourism is again a central feature of the Colombian economy. And with destinations such as Arrecifes beach in Tayrona National Natural Park, the “Eje Cafetero” (or “coffee trail”), and the historic districts of cities such as beautiful Cartagena and the capital Bogota, Colombia is definitely a good vacation spot. ‘Eco-tourism’ is a very popular developing industry. In Colombia, eco-tourists can enjoy the practically flawless beaches in the National Parks, the mountain coffee farms, and the dense Amazon jungle, to name just a few destinations. Colombia boasts the second most diverse ecology in the world, with only Brazil leading in terms of variety of plant and animal species. From the turquoise waters of the Caribbean to the lush greenery of the Amazon and the majestic Andes, Colombia has a lot for eco-tourists. Adventure lovers should not shy away, either: in the Santander region, thrill-seekers can get the adrenaline pumping with white-water rafting, bungee jumping, paragliding, and cave exploration. Colombia seems to have it all, no matter what kind of vacation you desire.

Cartagena or there official name Cartagena de Indias was founded in 1533 and was a vital port for all traders in the Caribbean area. Gold and silver usually left the port there on its way to Europe and pirates would loot the port to steal it, so the city built a wall around the city to protect it. This provided a unique experience to the port city. But what stands out in Cartagena is the Colonial Architecture that lines the streets of the city. The Palacio de la Inquisicon is their prime example of this type of architecture. The Palace served as a tribunal “court” and would prosecute anyone the Church believed was a heretic. The place is filled with torture mechanisms and information is along the hallways talking explaining what happened here. Another example of the splendid Colonial design is the Case de marques Valdehoyos. This place was occupied by the famous Marqus de Valdehoyos who was the key person in importing flour and slaves to the city. Also the Church of Santo Domingo is a great display of Colonial design within the city. This Church is one of the oldest and most impressive architectural religious objects in the entire city. As you can see there are many Colonial Architecture to see and learn about in Cartagena, Columbia.
